Shipboard Mechanical SME (Engineering Technician IV)

Epsilon Systems Solutions, Inc. has a job opportunity for an Shipboard Mechanical SME (ET IV) in Newport News, VA.

Summary: The Engineering Technician will provide Mechanical and other technical support during a US Navy carrier Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH).

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Performs or provides technical guidance and advice to Ship’s Force, NSSA, and RMC personnel pertinent to the operation, overhaul, and repair of specific items of auxiliary machinery, electrical, and hull support and aviation systems.
  • Aids others in the familiarization, overhaul, groom & repairing of various shipboard systems.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, or engineering instructions for assembling electronics units, applying knowledge of electronic theory and components.
  • Provides training and supervision to those assigned on a particular job or task.
  • Applies understanding of production and processes to assignments.
  • Provides training, as an adjunct, to an authorized repair tasking when specified.
  • Develops equipment/system specific training guides.
  • Performs “hands on” instruction and “On-The-Job Training” (OJT) through the application of current maintenance techniques and practices on actual equipment.
  • Performs a variety of complicated tasks.
  • May assist in the development and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
  • May perform duties outside of specialty in order to complete installation or work assignment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Eight (8) years’ experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems of naval ships, including:
    • Experience that clearly demonstrates the ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, diagrams, or other technical data pertaining to the construction and operation of naval hull, mechanical, & electrical equipment.
    • Two (2) years’ experience in a position of team leader or supervisor of subordinate work groups is desired.
  • An Associate Degree in an appropriate discipline from an accredited college, university or trade school MAY BE SUBSTITUTED for up to two (2) years of technician experience.
  • Quantified, specialized skills such as trade qualifications, manufacturer certifications of training for shipboard related systems, equipment, and components may be substituted for up to two (2) years of technician experience for each major qualification or specialized trade skill.
  • Demonstrated capability interacting with internal or external customers providing support involving the installation, modification, repair of equipment and systems.
  • Ability to work in a shipyard environment and perform physical requirements.
  • Pursuant to the various government contractual requirements, all applicants must be U.S. Citizens and must be able to obtain DBIDS access or a CAC.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mechanical/technical experience in shipboard systems such as auxiliary systems.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy organizations, functional missions, environments and programs.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office, particularly MS Word, Power Point, and Excel.
  • Secret level clearance preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Most work is performed aboard ships or in industrial conditions. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
